Kris Longknife's backstory behind her decision to join the Wardhaven Navy explained. This was a great character study to put our favorite space heroine into her proper place in her lifeline. I would have loved to see more of her time in OCS. However, the last conflict at her graduation parade came out of nowhere. Only at the end, we learned that there were two politicians' daughters in the class. Much less their enmity, echoes of the Hatfield-McCoy feud. Remember the old theater adage, if you show a shotgun in the first act, better make sure to use it by the third. Here, we never saw the shotgun. Unless we wonder if the conflict started in OCS in this story would appear in a future novel and be crucial to the plot. Still an enjoyable read.
