I have always enjoyed this story, but this revised version of "Secondhand Bird" doesn't have some of my favorite parts, and still lacks the later adventures of Bird Lady Pam. If you want the whole story, which originally was a serial in "The Grantville Gazette," then you need to go to those volumes. I don't have the numbers where "Secondhand Bird" segments appeared, regretfully.It is worth it, however, to read the entire story. This edition lacks information on how Pam came to meet her protector Gerbald and his wife, Dore, who became a best friend as well as housekeeper.The details on how a birdwatcher in Grantville comes to affect the world are also sparse. When the town of Grantville and the immediate countryside came through the Ring of Fire portal, birds also made the trip. Local Germans are seeing strange birds, and Pam is trying to protect those American birds that made the journey.Princess Kristina of Sweden is reading "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll and finds the dodo intriguing. American reference books give the extinction date for the dodo...and it's still thirty years away in the future. She realizes that there might be a chance to keep the dodo from extinction, and is referred to Pam for help. Kristina is but a child, yet wise beyond her years. She's got enough money of her own to fund a one-ship expedition to Mauritius, but learns from Pam that what's needed is a colony, not just a one-and-done visit. That colony will also be able to produce exotic spices, or at least be in an area to more easily trade for them, and the same goes for coffee.A multi-ship expedition with colonists sets out. Their ship is wrecked on an island. Salvaging goods from the wreck, they create a little community based on Gilligan's Island (yes, Grantville has videos and sitcoms are very popular!). They find dodos, and a mountainside where coffee trees grow!After studying the dodos, Pam directs the expedition to start searching for the other ships. She's now the default captain, as the original captain was still on the ship when it sank.Unfortunately they are prisoners of pirates and working as slave labor. Pam figures out a way to rescue the colonists, thanks to an inspiring episode of Gilligan's Island, and they set to work.I won't spoil the rest for you, but please consider looking through the "The Grantville Gazette" volumes, anthologies which carry out the continuing story of characters you will already know from "1632" and "1633." Those two books are by Eric Flint.The entire genre, to quote Wikipedia, is part of the "Ring of Fire" group of books. The 1632 series, also known as the 1632-verse or Ring of Fire series, is an alternate history book series and sub-series created, primarily co-written, and coordinated by American author Eric Flint and published by Baen Books.
